THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime will play on home soil as one of the tournament favourites in Montreal and could be celebrating his 19th birthday here if he reaches the round of 16.
  • The Canadian starlet was somewhat shocked in his third-round match with fellow youngster Ugo Humbert at Wimbledon last month before losing out to Marin Cilic last week at the Citi Open.
  • Aliassime holds a healthy 2-0 head-to-head record over compatriot Vasek Pospisil after their four-set tussle in the first round of Wimbledon at the beginning of last month.

VASEK POSPISIL

  • 29-year-old Vasek Pospisil is on his way back up the ATP rankings after missing most of the 2019 season with a back injury but lost to a far inferior opponent in the round of 16 of a Canadian Challenger event two weeks ago.
  • The Canadian will be playing on home soil but it will likely not feel that way against rising star Felix Auger-Aliassime, to whom Pospisil has lost twice, once on a hard court at last year’s Indian Wells.
  • Pospisil will play against Auger-Aliassime in the first round of the singles draw on Tuesday less than 24 hours after playing alongside him tonight in the Men’s Doubles draw against Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

THE PREDICTION

Vasek Pospisil’s return to match fitness saw him meet Felix Auger-Aliassime in his first professional match of 2019 at Wimbledon last month, with the elder taking the first set before losing in four. A match on home soil between the two Canadians will be some occasion for both players, and Auger-Aliassime will have yet more pressure to deal with as his fledgling career continues to explode. While this could go the distance, it is safer to assume that the 18-year-old will be aiming to win this tournament and can do it in two.
