THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Novak Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov 2-6, 6-3, 6-4

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Novak Djokovic totally controlled play in his quarter-final with Stefanos Tsitsipas, quashing claims that he was ill and out-of-sorts with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 victory over the world number seven.
  • World number one Djokovic has never lost a semi-final here in five previous campaigns, with this his sixth at a tournament he has won four times, and last lost at this stage of a tournament to Daniil Medvedev in Cincinnati.
  • The 32-year-old holds a very comfortable 8-1 lead in his head-to-head with next opponent Grigor Dimitrov, and has never lost to the Bulgarian on a hard court nor the latter stages of a tournament.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

  • Grigor Dimitrov looked excellent again in a commanding win over Cristian Garin in which he was broken twice but rarely looked troubled, winning four games in a row at one stage.
  • The Bulgarian is set for a big rise up the ATP world rankings board after showing some fierce form here and he is through to his second semi-final in five tournaments, losing to Daniil Medvedev at the US Open in his last.
  • 28-year-old Dimitrov has won favour with the Parisian crowd after some astounding performances and, after six consecutive years exiting at the round of 16 stage here, he is within two wins of the title.

THE PREDICTION

As with his superb run at the US Open, the last four draw has not been kind to Grigor Dimitrov here in serving up the world number one. After a flurry of gossip over Novak Djokovic’s poor health, he put in an extra-long practice on Friday morning and then totally dominated Stefanos Tsitsipas, immediately avenging a loss to the Greek in Shanghai last month. Dimitrov is in the kind of form that could beat Djokovic here, however the Serb sent out a message in his quarter-final for both the ATP Finals and Rafael Nadal. His battle to retain the world number one spot will go on another round here.
