Serbia’s Davis Cup team is the perfect blend of youth, experience and star quality with Novak Djokovic able to enjoy himself here with the pressures of the ATP tour behind him, while elder statesman Janko Tipsarevic and starlet Filip Krajinovic create a nice balance. Victor Troicki and Tipsarevic are unlikely to see much action but the former can be a handful on his day and could come in handy at some stage, while Dusan Lajovic is a decent top 50 player in his own right. World number two Djokovic will of course be doing most of the work here, but young Krajinovic could shine at this tournament and playing alongside Serbia’s hero will be an excellent and bountiful experience.

Japan fared much better than expected against a fearsome looking French side and Yoshihito Nishioka in particular did fantastically well to beat Gael Monfils in straight sets in the first match. Unfortunately, Yasutaka Uchiyama could not replicate his compatriot’s efforts against a dominant Jo-Wilfried Tsonga but he played valiantly alongside Ben McLachlan in the doubles. McLachlan and Uchiyama took the first set from recent ATP Finals champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut before falling just short in the decider, but the team spirit is clear to see and they will have won plenty of neutral support in Madrid.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a breeze for Serbia, though after Japan’s efforts on Tuesday against France it may not be as simple as expected. They could have been planning to rest Novak Djokovic here with Filip Krajinovic and Dusan Lajovic more than capable of beating a seriously weakened Japanese side. However, Yoshihito Nishioka’s heroics against Gael Monfils on Tuesday could mean that Djokovic will likely play, just to be sure, and that should see Serbia take their first Group A fixture 3-0 with incoming France a more daunting prospect.
