World number four Taylor Fritz will be eager to defend a substantial number of ranking points having reached the semi-finals in Madrid last year. 

The American was absent in Monte Carlo and could be vulnerable in his first outing on clay, but his head-to-head with Christopher O’Connell means this is the ideal opener on the dirt.

Fritz has won both of their previous encounters without dropping a set and although the Aussie ended a three-match losing run with his first-round success over Camilo Ugo Carabelli, there’s unlikely to be a big shock here as the third seed has the weapons and proven quality on the surface.
