Third seed Taylor Fritz will have to overcome clay-specialist Casper Ruud to reach the last eight in Madrid.
The American had to fight hard to level against Benjamin Bonzi prior to the French underdog retiring ahead of a deciding set.
It’ll be an even tougher test against two-time French Open finalist Ruud, who was excellent in his 6-3 6-3 success over Sebastian Korda.
Ruud leads the match-up 2-1 and that includes a 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-2 triumph on the clay of Roland-Garros last year.
The American’s defence will need to stand up well to the Norwegian’s loopy forehand if he’s to come up trumps here, but if Ruud is firing off his favoured wing and gets the depth, height and power, it could be decisive in the outcome.
