Sydney Thunder Preview: Renegades defeat proves costly

Sydney Thunder would’ve been eying up top spot in the league stage and an automatic passage through to the final heading into their match against Melbourne Renegades. However, a thumping nine-wicket defeat later and they’ve been consigned to the knockout match having finished in third-place. This means they must win both here and in the resulting challenger match vs Brisbane Heat to make the final.

Hobart Hurricanes preview: Narrow win over Perth decisive

Chasing 139 to beat Perth Scorchers at the WACA and send their tournament into the post-season, Hobart Hurricanes did it the hard way after putting on 51 runs for the first wicket. A batting collapse saw them reduced to 95/7 and on the verge of elimination, until an unbroken partnership of 44 between Scottish international Kathryn Bryce and Lauren Smith saw the Hurricanes home with 2.2 overs to spare.

Sydney Thunder Betting Analysis

Due to the extra games that come with play-off cricket in the WBBL, it’s likely that Sydney Thunder bowler Samantha Bates will end the season with the highest number of wickets in this season’s competition. Across ten games so far, left-arm spinner Bates has taken 19 wickets, only one less than Alana King, whose Perth Scorchers side have been knocked out of the tournament. Therefore, a shrewd move would be backing Bates to record over 1.5 match wickets against the Hurricanes.

Hobart Hurricanes Betting Analysis

The standout batter from a Hobart point of view during the league stage was opener Lizelle Lee and whilst her 44 against Perth may not have been her highest score of this year’s WBBL, it was arguably her most important, top-scoring in what was essentially a knockout match. The South African will be absolute crucial to the Hurricanes’ chances again in this one and warrants backing to score 20+ runs.

Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes Expert Prediction

For Hobart Hurricanes, you could argue that they have little to lose here. Perennial strugglers in WBBL cricket, they’ve already done extremely well just by making the play-offs. However, Sydney Thunder have been in and around the top of the table throughout the league stage and finished with three more points than the Hurricanes. With home advantage in their favour, they’ll be expected to win this knockout match, but the wicket of Lizelle Lee will be pivotal.
