Sumit Nagal vs Tomas Machac Prediction
Indian hope Sumit Nagal’s only ever Grand Slam victory came at last year’s Australian Open, where he defeated 31st seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets, and he went on the achieve his highest ATP ranking of 68 in June.
The latter of half of 2024 wasn’t as successful for Nagal, but he will hope that lightning strikes twice in Melbourne when he takes on another seed in the first round.
Tomas Machac's Australian Open preparation has hardly been ideal as the Czech number one was involved in a somewhat controversial encounter with Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the recent United Cup. Up a set against the American, a fatigue-ridden Machac launched into a tirade against his own team and unexpectedly forfeited the match.
That will have been a major learning experience for a player who has otherwise been playing the best tennis of his career. 2024 saw him reach his first ATP Singles final at the Geneva Open, while he also claimed Mixed Doubles Gold at the Paris Olympics alongside former partner Katerina Siniakova. The 24-year-old also reached the fourth round of the US Open in August – his best showing at a Grand Slam.
Assuming he can keep his emotions in check, Machac has to be favoured here based on his considerable rise up the rankings. Nagal has proven he can he a dangerous player on these occasions though, so this may go to four sets.
Sumit Nagal vs Tomas Machac Tip: Tomas Machac to win 3-1
