STUTTGART PREVIEW: CAN HOENESS’ SIDE COMPLETE ITALIAN JOB

Stuttgart had historically struggled against Italian clubs in Europe, winning only two of their last 11 games against opponents from Italy, prior to that memorable victory over Juventus. Now they have the opportunity to win two matches in a row vs Serie A opposition and in the process give their knockout qualification hopes another big boost.

Sebastian Hoeness’ men dug deep to gain a 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga most recently and they’ll need to do so again vs Atalanta, this time on their own ground, where they have been utterly formidable for a long period of time now.

ATALANTA PREVIEW: FIVE POINTS FROM NINE SEES ITALIANS FAIRLY WELL-PLACED

Expectations were high for the 2023-24 Europa League winners after they recorded a well-deserved point against Arsenal in their opening game and arguably should’ve won it. Since then, La Dea have picked up another four points, defeating Shakhtar Donetsk and drawing 0-0 with Celtic. The latter was a more frustrating result, Atalanta dominating the Scottish champions but ultimately failing to break them down.

Playing away from home is likely to suit them with Stuttgart expected to try and take the game to Atalanta offensively, which should open up holes that the Italians could wind up exploiting. They come into this match riding the crest of a wave after beating Serie A leaders Napoli in Naples this past weekend.

STUTTGART TEAM NEWS: LEWELING AND ZAGADOU AMONG THOSE MISSING FOR HOSTS

Stuttgart could have up to five players out of this game depending on the status of Leonidas Stergiou who is battling a back problem. Key names such as Jamie Leweling and Dan-Axel Zagadou are unavailable with hamstring and knee injuries respectively.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Nubel; Vagnoman, Rouault, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Karazor Stiller, Millot, Fuhrich; Demirovic, Undav

UNAVAILABLE: Zagadou (Injured), Keitel (Injured), Raimund (Injured), Leweling (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Stergiou (Injured)

ATALANTA TEAM NEWS: LITTLE CHANGE EXPECTED FOLLOWING NAPOLI TRIUMPH

It would be no surprise to see Gian Piero Gasperini opt for the same formation that worked so well against Napoli last time out with Pasalic playing just behind Retegui and Lookman. Raoul Bellanova is one player who could come back into the starting XI though, replacing Ruggeri.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; Pasalic; Retegui, Lookman

UNAVAILABLE: Scamacca (Injured), Scalvini (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

STUTTGART VS ATALANTA PREDICTION

Stuttgart’s fantastic home record gets put to the test against a club who have proven so effective in European competition under Gasperini for a long period of time now, taking it to new levels over the past 12 months. But after shocking Juventus and scaring Real Madrid, Stuttgart won’t fear the visitors and will still look to impose their usually attacking playstyle upon Atalanta.

This should lead to an entertaining encounter with Atalanta certainly unlikely to back down and hugely potent going forward themselves through the likes of Lookman and Retegui. With that in mind, backing both teams to score is worth serious consideration here, regardless of who comes out on top.
