Southampton Preview: Bleak outlook

Southampton's first Premier League win of the campaign - a 1-0 victory over Everton at St. Mary's - was followed with a 2-0 defeat at Wolves, who leapfrogged them in the table to leave the Saints bottom of the pile heading into the weekend's action.

No side in the division has scored fewer than Southampton's seven at this stage of the season, while that win over Everton was their only clean sheet in 14 games in all competitions in 2024-25.

Liverpool Preview: Table-toppers

Before the international break, Liverpool took advantage of Man City's unexpected dip in form to go top of the table, with the Reds continuing to go from strength to strength on all fronts in Arne Slot's first season in charge of the club.

Their only defeat this season in any competition was their 0-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in mid-September, and they have otherwise won 15 of their 17 games overall.

Southampton Team News: Ramsdale & Bednarek blows

First-teamers Aaron Ramsdale and Jan Bednarek have both suffered injuries since Southampton were last in action and will spend a number of weeks on the sidelines, in what is a significant blow to the Saints' defensie resolve.

Four other players remain absent, but Ryan Fraser and Kamaldeen Sulemana are fit and available for selection.

Predicted XI (5-4-1): McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Suguwara, Harwood-Bellis, Stephens, Manning; Armstrong, Aribo, Lallana, Fernandes; Archer

Unavailable: Ramsdale (Injured), Bazunu (Injured), Bednarek (Injured), Smallbone (Injured), Downes (Injured), Stewart (Injured)

Questionable:

Liverpool Team News: Alisson & TAA just short

Virgil van Dijk has been passed fit after some minor complaints while on international duty with the Netherlands, but this game will come too soon for both Alisson and Trent Alexander-Arnold with the pair expected back over the next week or two.

Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota are also close to returning, while Harvey Elliott has resumed training but first needs to build up his fitness.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Gakpo; Diaz

Unavailable: Alisson (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured), Elliott (Fitness), Chiesa (Injured), Jota (Injured)

Questionable: Danns (Injured)

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction

It's top vs bottom on Sunday and it is difficult to see anything other than a routine victory for the visitors, who have greatly impressed so far this season under Arne Slot and looking every bit the title challenger while their nearest rivals falter.

To make matters worse for the hosts, they have lost two important assets in the form of Ramsdale and Bednarek to injury, so don't be surprised to see Liverpool rack up the goals here in what has the potential to be a high-scoring rout.

Southampton vs Liverpool Tip: Liverpool to win & over 3.5 goals
