Sonay Kartal defeated Jacqueline Cristian 6-2 7-5 to make it through to the second-round. A strong first serve percentage of 82% contributed to her win and she now has the top 50 of the world rankings in her sight. She does have her work cut out in the next round when she takes on Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina had a stunning week in Rouen, not dropping a set and coasting to victory in the majority of her matches as she wrapped up her 18th victory on the WTA Tour. She is now on a seven-match winning streak and the Ukrainian must believe she can continue the momentum with a deep run in this 1000 event. 

However, her performance at this same tournament last year left a lot to be desired as she lost at the first hurdle. Nevertheless, we think Svitolina is playing at a much higher level and she should make it through comfortably against Kartal.
