Si Jiahui vs Ben Woollaston prediction
World number 13 Si Jiahui eased to victory in the first round as he overcame David Gilbert 10-6. Had it not been for two late century breaks by Gilbert with Jiahui 9-4 ahead, the scoreline would have had a far more convincing look about it. Regardless, the Chinese 22-year-old was comfortable throughout and after a cagey and even opening, he pulled away in the middle frames reeling off four frames in a row to kill that match off.
A semi-finalist in 2022 as a qualifier, Jiahui has excellent pedigree even at the age of 22 and he will have high hopes of going deep in Sheffield this time around.
He comes up against Ben Woollaston who will be high on confidence after he came through a tough match with Mark Selby to upset the four-time world champion 10-8. Woollaston got the win by holding his nerve while frustrations boiled over for Selby and that was the key to victory for the world number 44.
Woollaston has met Jiahui twice before in the Championship League as they drew 2-2 last year and Jiahui won 3-0 back in 2020.
Over the best of 25, we simply have to favour the more prolific Jiahui to get the win here. We can see it being close early on but the Chinese 22-year-old played well in the first round and can kick on another level here. Woollaston did incredibly well against Selby but Selby had himself to blame in what was a low-quality match by their standards. Expect Jiahui to win and consider him on the handicap for the extra value.
