Shavkat Rakhmonov: Kazakh star determined to stay in contention for title shot
Shavkat Rakhmonov (18-0) saw his title shot with Belal Muhammad fall through after the champion picked up an injury but he has to overcome that disappointment here if he is to stay first in line for a shot. Not a single one of his 18 wins have gone to the judges’ scorecards and with this bout over five rounds, it is hard to see this one going the distance neither. Rakhmonov has dominated everybody he has met including Stephen Thompson in his last bout a year ago when he submitted Wonderboy at UFC 296. He cannot ease off the gas now and it is unlikely he will.
Ian Machado Garry: Golden opportunity for Irish star to earn title shot
Ian Machado Garry (15-0) was supposed to be fighting Joaquin Buckley at UFC on ESPN 63 next week but instead he was handed a shot at Rakhmonov after the title fight fell through. This is a golden opportunity for the outspoken Irish star but one he will relish. He has earned this opportunity by winning a shared record of eight consecutive wins in the welterweight division and a ninth will hand him a title shot against Muhammad. This really does represent a step up in quality however and it will be interesting to see if he can rise to the challenge.
Shavkat Rakhmonov vs Ian Machado Garry Prediction
Two unbeaten fighters are putting their records on the line here and this fight has title shot ramifications as the winner will get a shot at Belal Muhammad’s welterweight belt.
Studying the two resumes, it is Rakhmonov’s that stands out in terms of calibre of opponent. The manner of his wins is just as impressive and the Kazakh star really has been dominant en route to this stage.
Machado Garry talks a very good game – following in the footsteps of compatriot Conor McGregor. Whether he can back that up, remains to be seen however,
We think Rakhmonov is a class above Machado Garry and it is hard to see the Irishman stopping him from getting his well-deserved title shot. Whether it is submission or late knockout, we expect to see Rakhmonov’s hand getting raised.
Prediction: Shavkat Rakhmonov to win by KO/TKO or submission
