THE LOWDOWN
SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa will look to get the defence of their title underway with a strong performance as they face a potentially tricky game against Scotland in their opening game of the tournament. The Springboks have won their last four matches and have lost just one of their last eight so arrive in France on a good run of form and will be tough to beat.
SCOTLAND
Scotland have improved immeasurably under Gregor Townsend’s stewardship but they will need to go up another gear if they are to mix it with South Africa. The Scots will need to go toe-to-toe with a very physical side and while there will be plenty of heart, they look likely to fall short unless they can match that physicality.
THE PREDICTION
South Africa will begin the 2023 Rugby World Cup as one of the favourites as the reigning champions take on Scotland. The Scots will hold no fear here having produced some great displays in the last few years but they know they will need to produce some real quality if they are to stick with the Springboks. South Africa arrive on a good run of form and while the Scots can push them close, it would be a surprise if the holders did not get off the mark with a solid win.
BETTING TIP: South Africa to win
