THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

After finishing as the runners-up in 2019, England would have believed they could build on that effort and go one better here but that is unlikely to be the case. Their preparation under Steve Borthwick has been poor and there is little to be positive about in what could be a very underwhelming tournament for the English.

ARGENTINA

Argentina claimed the scalp of Australia in their recent Rugby Championship matchup and the Pumas will hold no fear ahead of this Rugby World Cup opener. They will be full of confidence having produced some eye-catching performances over the past few years with them competing with some of the best teams in the world and pushing reigning world champions South Africa all the way in a recent one-point defeat.

THE PREDICTION

This game will tell us a lot about England’s chances of winning the tournament. They appear to be a long way off based on their recent performances and expectations have been altered as a result. Argentina will sense a brilliant opportunity to cause an upset here and lay down a marker for the rest of the tournament and the Pumas are favoured to come out on top.

BETTING TIP: Argentina to win
