THE TEAM NEWS

WESTS TIGERS

  • Wests Tigers will begin a new era under the stewardship of some familiar faces as Tim Sheens returns to the club, assisted by legendary former five-eighth Benji Marshall.
  • The pair will hope to change the fortunes of the struggling club but despite adding Api Koroisau and Isaiah Papali’i, there is still a lack of quality throughout the roster.

Starting 13: Laurie, Nofoaluma, Naden, Talau, Staines, Doueihi, Brooks, Utoikamanu, Koroisau, Klemmer, Papali’i, Blore, Ofahengaue – Interchanges: Simpkin, Twal, Pole, Kepaoa – Reserves: Seyfarth, To’a, Wakeham, Matamua, Tupou

Unavailable: Ken Maumalo (Injured), John Bateman (Fitness)

GOLD COAST TITANS

  • Gold Coast Titans struggled for consistency last year and some poor results at the start of this campaign could place head coach Justin Holbrook under some serious pressure.
  • The Titans have spent big to bring in the experienced Kieran Foran to guide them around the pitch but there will be a lot resting on the shoulders of AJ Brimson who lines up at fullback in this contest.

Starting 13: Brimson, Khan-Pereira, Schoupp, Sami, J. Fifita, Foran, Boyd, Jolliffe, Verrills, Fa’asuamaleaui, D. Fifita, Fermor, Liu – Interchanges: Campbell, Clark, Fotuaika, Stimson – Reserves: McIntyre, Kini, Randall, Haas, Spry

Unavailable: Patrick Herbert (Injured), Brian Kelly (Suspended), Chris Randall (Injured), Beau Fermor (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These two teams could both be battling it out at the wrong end of the ladder come the end of the season so they will be desperate to get off to a strong start. Wests Tigers have turned to former boss Tim Sheens in an effort to get back into top eight contention but their roster still has some alarming holes in it. Gold Coast Titans can say similar with a smattering of quality players and one of those, Beau Fermor, has been cruelly ruled out for the campaign on the eve of the season. This game could go either way but defences are unlikely to be on top so expect a game that produces over 42.5 points.
