THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

  • Newcastle Knights put up a good fight against Brisbane Broncos last week but ultimately fell short, although they will feel they can take plenty of positives from that performance.
  • Kalyn Ponga was again impressive back in the fullback role and he will retain his spot there while the Knight have been forced into a couple of changes with Greg Marzhew dropped for disciplinary reasons while Tyson Frizell is on Origin duty.

Starting 13: Ponga, Young, Gagai, Best, Tuala, Gamble, Hastings, D. Saifiti, Crossland, Thompson, Lucas, Fitzgibbon, Elliott – Interchanges: Mann, J. Saifiti, Hetherington, Croker – Reserves: Johns, Sasagi, Jones, Miller, Clune

Unavailable: Jayden Brailey (Injured), Hymel Hunt (Injured), Greg Marzhew (Disciplinary), Tyson Frizell (Origin)

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

  • After edging Canterbury Bulldogs in their prior game, Sydney Roosters were unable to build on that result as they fell to a one-sided defeat against Penrith Panthers last week.
  • It is now four losses in five games for the Tricolours and they will now be without skipper James Tedesco who is on Origin duty along with Lindsay Collins so Joey Manu reverts to fullback with youngster Sandon Smith coming into the halves.

Starting 13: Manu, Tupou, Allan, Bi. Smith, Pauga, Keary, S. Smith, Waerea-Hagreaves, Turpin, N. Butcher, E. Butcher, Tupouniua, Whyte – Interchanges: Hutchison, Brown, May, Crichton – Reserves: Wong, Dockar-Clay, Paulo, Katoa, El-Zakham

Unavailable: Connor Watson (Injured), Paul Momirovski (Injured), Sam Walker (Injured), Brandon Smith (Injured), Victor Radley (Suspended), Joseph Suaalii (Suspended), James Tedesco (Origin), Lindsay Collins (Origin)

THE PREDICTION

This is an intriguing contest as two struggling teams do battle. Newcastle Knights have been inconsistent for large periods of this season but they appear to have improved of late and will fancy their chances on home soil against Sydney Roosters. The visitors have lost four of their last five and were hugely underwhelming once again as Penrith Panthers convincingly dispatched them last week. With a huge array of talent on the sidelines this week, it will fall on Joey Manu to try and dig them out of a hole in the fullback role but the Knights have won four of their last five on home soil so they are favoured to prevail here.
