THE TEAM NEWS
BRISBANE BRONCOS
- Brisbane Broncos could only manage to finish in 14th last year on the back of their humiliating wooden spoon in 2020 but more will be expected this season following the arrival of marquee halfback Adam Reynolds.
- Reynolds was tasked with changing the fortunes of the Broncos but he will be absent for this game after testing positive for COVID-19 so Albert Kelly and Billy Walters are given the nod in the halves for this round one contest.
Starting 13: Isaako, Oates, Staggs, Farnworth, Cobbo, Walters, Kelly, Palasia, Turpin, Haas, Capewell, Riki, Carrigan – Interchanges: James, Kennedy, Robati, Roberts – Reserves: Jensen, Lee, Pereira, Martin, Mam, Bayliss, Quai-Ward
Unavailable: Xavier Willison, Kobe Hetherington, Adam Reynolds, Brendan Piakura, Tesi Niu, Thomas Flegler
SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS
- South Sydney Rabbitohs fell agonisingly short in last year’s Grand Final as they were defeated by Penrith Panthers and with head coach Wayne Bennett stepping aside for Jason Demetriou to take charge, it will be interesting to see how they respond this term.
- The Rabbits have also had to deal with the loss of halfback Adam Reynolds and with fullback Latrell Mitchell still suspended from the ban he copped at the end of last season, Lachlan Ilias is named in the #7 jersey for this opening contest with Black Taaffe slotting in at fullback.
Starting 13: Taaffe, Johnston, Paulo, Graham, Milne, Walker, Ilias, Tatola, Cook, Nicholls, Koloamatangi, Arrow, Murray – Interchanges: Host, Havili, Burgess, Chee Kam – Reserves: Moale, Mansour, Knight, Kennar, Mamouzelos, Tass, Hawkins
Unavailable: Latrell Mitchell
THE PREDICTION
Brisbane Broncos will need to be much better and a lot more consistent in 2022 if they are to make a push for the finals. That has been the talk out of Red Hill with a couple of impressive off-season additions attempting to change the culture at the club. However, one of those signings will be missing for this opening fixture with Adam Reynolds unable to take to the field against his former club. South Sydney Rabbitohs finished as runners-up last year after losing out in a hard-fought Grand Final but with aspirations to make the showpiece once again, the away side will be eager to get off to a strong start and they should be able to do just that by covering the -5.5 handicap.
