Roma Preview: Roman ruins

When Claudio Ranieri came out of retirement to become Roma’s third permanent manager of the season during the November international break they looked like they could be in genuine relegation trouble this season but have since moved themselves towards the European spots.

The Giallorossi did suffer a turnaround in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League in midweek, suffering a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Athletic Club at San Mames. However, their 1-0 win away at Empoli last weekend made it five successive Serie A wins for the Romans.

Cagliari Preview: Steady Sardinians

Cagliari, under the management of Serie A’s so-called ‘miracle worker’ Davide Nicola, have been steady throughout the campaign as the Sardinians begin this match day sitting a few points and places clear of the bottom three and the relegation places.

The visitors most recently shared a 1-1 draw with Genoa at the Sardegna Arena last weekend with Nicolas Viola’s opener cancelled out by Maxwel Cornet early in the second-half. That result does mean they are now enduring a four-match winless run of form.

Roma Team News: No Celik

Former Germany international centre-back Mats Hummels was sent off against Athletic in midweek but he is available in Serie A. However, Turkey international full-back Zeki Celik is unavailable due to a thigh injury.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Nelsson, Hummels, Ndicka; Abdulhamid, Paredes, Kone, Angelino; Matias Soule, Pellegrini; Shomurodov

Unavailable: Celik (Injured)

Questionable:

Cagliari Team News: Some new issues

Cagliari are dealing with a couple of new issues as they head to Rome this weekend as Romania international attacker Florinel Coman is now a doubt, whilst Gabriele Zappa is sidelined alongside Angola international striker Zito Luvumbo.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Caprile; Zappa, Yerry Mina, Luperto, Obert; Makoumbou, Deiola; Zortea, Viola, Oristanio; Piccoli

Unavailable: Zappa (Injured), Zito Luvumbo (Injured)

Questionable: Coman (Injured)

Roma vs Cagliari Prediction

The Romans have been very impressive in Serie A ever since the appointment of Ranieri in November and they have a chance of European qualification. They face a Cagliari side that have been impressive, at least in relative terms, so far with a solid style of football but they lack a cutting edge in the final third. Roma, despite their European excursions potentially affecting them, are firm favourites for this one at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma vs Cagliari Tip: Roma to win & under 3.5 goals
