Claudio Ranieri returned to Rome over the November international break and the fixture list has not been kind to the veteran but performances have improved. It is another tough fixture as they take on an extremely strong and impressive Atalanta side at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma Preview: Ranieri’s Roma
Claudio Ranieri retired from management at the end of last season after keeping Cagliari in Serie A but he was tempted out of that by a return to his boyhood club a few weeks ago, becoming their third manager of the campaign already after the sackings of club legend Daniele De Rossi as well as former Torino boss Ivan Juric.
The Giallorossi begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just three points above the bottom three and the relegation places. The second Ranieri reign in charge of Roma began with a 1-0 loss to league leaders Napoli at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona last weekend before a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League in midweek.
Atalanta Preview: Gasp’s Bergamasci
Gian Piero Gasperini is perhaps in a third or fourth iteration of his Atalanta side as the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League winners recover from a slow-ish start brought about by a tumultuous summer to launch themselves into a Serie A title race with the Bergamasci sitting just one point and one place below league leaders Napoli ahead of the 14th match day of the campaign.
They have rediscovered that remarkable scoring touch of Gasperini’s Atalanta at their absolute very best and they come into this one on the back off a 6-1 demolition of Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League in midweek. They have won ten and drawn one of their last 11 matches across all competitions.
Roma Team News: Pisilli suspension
Real Madrid-linked centre-back Mario Hermoso is a key injury doubt for this one but Roma have begun to use experienced former Germany international Mats Hummels at the back.
Nicolo Pisilli is missing through suspension due to picking up too many yellow cards of late, whilst Uzbekistan international Eldor Shomurodov is also out injured.
Predicted XI (4-5-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka, Tasende; El Shaarawy, Kone, Cristante, Pellegrini, Dybala; Dovbyk
Unavailable: Pisilli (Suspended), Shomurodov (Injured)
Questionable: Mario Hermoso (Injured)
Atalanta Team News: Zappacosta out
Atalanta have a very deep squad, especially in attacking positions, and were even able to heavily rotate for that 6-1 thrashing of Young Boys in Berne the other day.
The visitors are dealing with a couple of injury issues as former Chelsea wing-back Davide Zappacosta is sidelined alongside Gianluca Scamacca, nearing a return from an ACL injury.
Predicted XI (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Hien, Toloi; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Pasalic; Retegui, Lookman
Unavailable: Zappacosta (Injured), Scamacca (Injured)
Questionable:
Roma vs Atalanta Prediction
There is an argument to be made that the rate of Atalanta’s scoring and their overall form is very good and a good season can be sustained but the sheer rate right now is clearly unsustainable so that will come to an end soon. However, it is unlikely to be this weekend, despite Roma beginning to simplify their style to get the best out of themselves under Ranieri. Roma will perhaps be stubborn and tough to play against but Atalanta remain favourites for this one in the capital city.
