Roberto Carballes Baena had an extremely disappointing succession of tournaments during the South American clay court swing in February. He exited at the earliest opportunity in Argentina, Rio and Chile.

His form did not improve during the hard court events of Indian Wells and Miami, though he did fare better in his last tournament, where he transitioned back to clay. In Morocco, at the Grand Prix Hassan, he managed to reach the semi-finals before a straight sets loss to Luciano Darderi. 

Jordan Thompson exited the Houston Open early but did show signs of life in Monte-Carlo, winning his first-round match and then taking the first set against three-time winner Stefanos Tsitsipas. Unfortunately for the Australian, the Greek would go on to win in three sets but Thompson should take encouragement from his performance.

Thompson leads the head-to-head 1-0 but they’ve never played on clay before, while Carballes Baena enjoyed a decent run here last year, which included a win over Lorenzo Musetti. We predict a close one.
