Veteran Roberto Bautista Agut meets Jaume Munar in an all-Spanish showdown to decide who meets top seed Alexander Zverev in the second round. 

Bautista Agut, 37, has a 3-13 record so far this year but two of those victories have arrived recently on the clay. 

The former semi-finalist in Madrid leads the head-to-head 2-1 against Munar, who is 10 years his junior, but has only won two of his six matches on the dirt this year and has lost four of his last five outings across all surfaces. 

Munar is ranked four places below RBA but did win their most recent showdown at last year’s French Open 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-1, with the previous two encounters having less meaning given they were back in 2018 and 2019 in Gstaad. 

Both players will want to impress in their homeland and both have the game to suit the faster conditions in the Spanish capital. 

Munar’s speed about the court could be key if it turns into a lengthy tussle and his recent win over Frances Tiafoe in Barcelona shows he enjoys the big-match spotlight.
