Rennes Preview: Avoiding stagnation

With former Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli at the helm, Stade Rennais started his reign slowly but they have since been able to push themselves into the middle-of-the-table in Ligue 1 with two much-needed victories in their last three matches in the league.

The hosts come into this one on the back of a 5-1 demolition of struggling Le Havre at Stade Oceane in their most recent outing last weekend thanks to goals from Azor Matusiwa, Lorenz Assignon, Armand Kalimuendo, Mousa Al Tamari and Carlos Andres Gomez.

Nantes Preview: Canaries struggling

Antoine Kombouare’s Nantes begin their 29th match of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 campaign sitting three points clear of the bottom three and the danger zone with two of their seven wins so far this season coming in their last three matches.

The Canaries managed to pull off a shock 2-1 defeat of Nice at the Allianz Riviera down on the south coast last weekend with Douglas Augusto giving Nantes the lead before Ali Abdi equalised moments later but they then secured all three points via Matthis Abline.

Rennes Team News: Blas a doubt

Alidu Seidu, who suffered an ACL injury in Jorge Sampaoli’s first game in charge of Rennes in November, remains sidelined for Rennes this weekend, whilst defender Mikayil Faye a doubt alongside key attacker Ludovic Blas.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Samba; Jacquet, Rouault, Brassier; Assignon, Matusiwa, Cisse, Fofana, Truffert; Al Tamari, Kalimuendo

Unavailable: Seidu (Injured)

Questionable: Faye (Injured), Blas (Injured)

Nantes Team News: Coquelin out

Former Arsenal and Valencia midfielder Francis Coquelin is now unavailable for Nantes this weekend due to a hamstring injury. They also have a few other injury issues with former Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella also a doubt due to a hip issue.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Lopes; Sow, Pallois, Amian; Thomas, Douglas Augusto, Leroux, Cozza; Elia, Abline, Simon

Unavailable: Coquelin (Injured), Mahamoud (Injured)

Questionable: Zeze (Injured), Centonze (Injured), Pedro Chirivella (Injured)

Rennes vs Nantes Prediction

Stade Rennais have been trying to get to grips with Jorge Sampaoli’s aggressive and intense pressing style of football as it takes its time to bed in due to the amount of pressing that is required. They now face a Nantes side that have perhaps been a little better to watch and much-improved in the last few weeks as they battle against the drop so both teams scoring at Roazhon Park would appear a good bet for this one.
