A strong end to the year, which included a WTA 125k title in Charleston, gave Renata Zarazua her highest ranking of 51 in the world. However, the Mexican has struggled to replicate that form this season and hasn’t advanced to the latter stages of any tournament she’s competed in.
She does seem to perform at her best on clay so this part of the season could prove crucial for Zarazua and her overall prospects. Marie Bouzkova will be her opponent and has only featured in four events this season.
Despite being the top seed, Bouzkova fell at the quarter-final stage of Copa Colsanitas. She has struggled with injuries in recent times, and didn’t play much of the clay court season last year before a decent run at the French Open where she made the third-round before losing to eventual winner Iga Swiatek.
They haven’t played on clay before, but Bouzkova does lead the head-to-head 2-0, with their last match being over six years ago. This is difficult to call but we’re leaning towards Bouzkova winning in a three-set match.
