Rebecca Sramkova showed great character to come from a set down against Katie Volynets to win 3-6 6-2 6-2 in the first round. That was a huge win for the 28-year-old Slovak player and will provide a real confidence boost coming into the second round.

She now meets world number two Iga Swiatek who has started the year impressively. She was excellent in the United Cup representing her nation and now she is determined to far in Melbourne.

She had a tough opening match against Katerina Siniakova on Monday but she came through that well 6-3 6-4 and her first serve was excellent winning 79%. Her general game was really solid without ever finding top gear but she will have been pleased with the display.

She now meets Sramkova in what will be an interesting battle and the pair have never met previously. Swiatek is playing well right now and she will take some stopping. We expect her to win in straight sets.
