2025 began with a real breakthrough moment for Polina Kudermetova with the 21-year-old reaching the final of the Brisbane International, and although she has had some mixed results since then, she has fought her way past Claire Liu and 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the third round on her debut at Indian Wells.

This is also uncharted territory for Sonay Kartal, who recorded her first ever win over a top-20 player when she defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round. A lucky loser after falling in qualifying, the Brit also defeated Varvara Lepchenko in the first round.

Kartal’s second-round win is surely the biggest moment of the 23-year-old’s career on the WTA circuit, so this is an intriguing contest against another player who has been making a name for herself this year. Expect some swings in momentum in this one, but one which Kudermetova could edge.
