Peter Wright vs Wesley Plaisier Prediction

Two-time world champion Peter Wright begins his Ally Pally campaign aiming to avoid a repeat of his shock 3-0 defeat to Jim Williams last year, which happened at the same stage of the competition.

‘Snakebite’ has done little this year to suggest that he can be a contender over the next fortnight, but the former world number one has shown glimpses here and there that he can still produce top-level darts. His sole title in 2024 came at the German Darts Championship in the summer, where he notably defied a 106 average from Luke Littler in the final.

Wesley Plaisier is one a of a small number of players to have won a PDC ranking event without holding a Tour card – a feat he achieved in October when he went all the way at Players Championship 28, defeating Josh Rock in the final. The Dutchman also reached the finals of two other Players Championship events when he filled in for absent tour card holders, while he has won four Challenge Tour events as well as the WDF World Masters title for a second time in 2024.

Make no mistake, an upset could be on the cards here. An upset by name at least, as Plaiser – despite not holding a PDC Tour card – has arguably enjoyed a stronger year then Wright, who appears to be a fading force in the game. Plaisier, though, will have to perform considerably better than he did on his Alexandra Palace debut on Monday, when he averaged just 82.56 in a 3-2 victory over Japanese thrower Ryusei Azemoto. If the Dutchman can brush up on his doubles, then he could be worth a punt.
