Pedro Martinez was somewhat fortunate to get the walkover in the first round as Luciano Darderi was forced to retire. Martinez was leading 6-3 4-1 at the time but it is difficult to read too much into that match.

After being eliminated in the qualifying rounds last year, making it to the second round will give him confidence although he has an incredibly difficult task ahead as he now meets Alexander Zverev.

The German second seed was solid if not spectacular in his first round 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Lucas Pouille. He only converted three of the 18 break points he generated and one would expect him not to be so wasteful in this match.

Zverev did win their only previous meeting that came on clay last year. He cruised to a 6-2 6-4 win and it would be no surprise to see a similarly emphatic win here.
