PLAYER A VS PLAYER B PREDICTION
Andy Murray was all set to play in the Singles event in Paris, but the Scot was forced to withdraw in order to focus fully on the Doubles event with Dan Evans. That in itself does not bode well for what could be his last match of competitive tennis, with Murray set to bring the curtain down on his career following the Olympics.
Murray’s recent Doubles escapades at Wimbledon, alongside brother Jamie, did not go entirely to plan, and there is not a great deal of hope that he can have a deep run with a different partner here, especially given the uncertainty around his physical condition.
Murray fans may point to the fact that one of the opponents on the other side of the net, Kei Nishikori, has seen better days himself. The Japanese former world number four has endured an injury-plagued couple of years but has at least been on court more often than Murray this year.
Neither Dan Evans nor Taro Daniel are particularly proficient on clay themselves, the pair having never gone beyond the second round at the French Open, played on these very courts.
In what is bound to be an emotional match, we’re backing Murray and Evans to dig deep and secure one more moment of celebration for the Scot by making it to the second round, but it would be a surprise if they were to go much further.
