An interesting matchup in the first round sees Alex de Minaur meet Jan-Lennard Struff in what should be an entertaining clash. So much depends on the fitness of De Minaur who has not been seen since Wimbledon and it could very well be the case that he is still not completely recovered but wants to represent his country on the big stage.
That is the only real red flag around De Minaur and is likely factored into the betting which sees Struff favourite. De Minaur has won their last two meetings including in the round of 32 at Roland Garros in the French Open. The talented Australian will fancy his chances but will just need his body to hold up.
Struff has been active since Wimbledon having played the Swiss Open two weeks ago and reaching the semi-finals there before losing to Quentin Halys. That allowed him to get back on clay ahead of this tournament and will no doubt serve him well coming into the Olympics.
So much around this match depends on De Minaur’s fitness. Assuming that he is fully fit, he is the pick here but approach this one with plenty of caution.
