USA PREVIEW: RODMAN THE HERO AS USA NEED EXTRA TIME TO EDGE PAST JAPAN

USA had to show real resilience against a determined Japan, who worked so hard to shut out the notorious attacking trio of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson for so long. However, such a quality frontline can never be counted out and it was Rodman who finally found a way through in extra time, scoring the winning goal for Emma Hayes’ side.

Having racked up nine goals across the group stage, this was a different sort of test for USA and Hayes will be delighted at how her team maintained defensive composure over the course of 120 minutes, securing their second clean sheet of the tournament. These are the sort of games where all that matters is finding a way, which is exactly what USA did.

GERMANY PREVIEW: MORE PENALTY SUCCESS FOR GERMANY SEES THEM KNOCK OUT CANADA

Germany were indebted to goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, whose penalty shootout heroics saw them through to the last four following a 0-0 draw with Canada. The Gotham FC stopper saved two Canadian penalties, before scoring the winning spot kick herself, booking Germany’s place in the semi-finals where they will understandably start as underdogs.

After giving up 22 shots vs Canada, Germany will need to tighten up defensively to stand a chance this time around against the Rodman, Smith and Swanson trio who tore them apart in the group stage.

USA VS GERMANY PREDICTION

Whilst both these two nations found the net with regularity across the group stage, USA and Germany both found it tougher in the quarter-finals. With the pressure ramped up and any mistake likely to prove so costly, it’s understandable that the goals dried up, until USA’s extra-time breakthrough.

Emma Hayes’ team will hope to make the same fast start as they did last time out against Germany, but their European opponents will surely be better prepared for it on this occasion. It would be no surprise to see another tense knockout stage encounter, this time in the semi-finals and backing under 2.5 goals to be scored across normal time looks the smart play.

USA VS GERMANY TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS SCORED
