Less than a year ago, Spain left the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as world champions, whilst Germany were knocked out in humiliating fashion. Now they face off against each other for a bronze medal but the gap hasn’t closed as much as it seems.

SPAIN PREVIEW: FRUSTRATION FOR THE SPANISH
Spain will be immensely frustrated because they are the world champions as well as the world number one with a star studded squad that is arguably even better than the one that won in Australia last year.
They cruised through the groups with three wins out of three before surviving a scare against Colombia on penalties in the quarter-finals. Then, out of nowhere, they suffered what can and should be seen as simply a bizarre 4-2 loss to what had previously been a bad Brazil side.
GERMANY PREVIEW: GERMAN PRIDE
Still under the interim management of Horst Hrubesch, Germany will be pleased to have reached this stage of the competition and given themselves a chance of a medal in what is the first phase of their rebuild after their poor showing at the FIFA World Cup last year.
They began with an impressive 3-0 hammering of Australia and also defeated Zambia in the groups with those victories sandwiching a loss to Team USA but penalties against Canada was enough to restore enough pride to say this was a success of a tournament before another loss to the US.
SPAIN VS GERMANY PREDICTION
The men’s side are going for gold against hosts France at these Olympics but Spain’s women also have a valuable chance to add to the medal tally. Germany were gold medal winners of this event back in Rio in 2016 but finishing fourth will be seen as enough progress for them to be confident moving forward, despite being UEFA Women’s EUROs runners’ up in 2022. Spain are firm favourites for the bronze.
