Ranked number 36 in the FIFA Women’s Rankings, Nigeria come into the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris as one of the weakest teams in the competition. They kick off their campaign against a Brazilian side that have been silver medallists in 2004 and 2008 but will hope to get a step further this time around.

NIGERIA PREVIEW: AVOIDING HUMILIATION
It may sound a touch harsh or defeatist, but it would be a successful campaign for the Nigerians if they manage to avoid any annihilations or outright humiliation. The Super Falcons, under the management of Randy Waldrum, face a really tough test.
In what is likely to be described as the ‘group of death’ alongside Spain, Brazil and Japan; the Nigerians do have some talent, most notably with midfielder Jennifer Echegini. They qualified for the tournament by defeating Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Cameroon and South Africa earlier this year.
BRAZIL PREVIEW: EXPERIENCE IN ABUNDANCE
As mentioned, Brazil were runners’ up and silver medallists at both the 2004 Olympics and the 2008 Olympics. Quite remarkably, their number ten for this tournament, Marta, with 116 goals in 186 caps for her country, was a part of both squads.
Marta, as well as Tamires in midfield, are a part of a group of very experienced internationals looking to re-establish the quality of the Brazilian women’s team on the international stage. They are by no means favourites for the competition but should contend.
NIGERIA VS BRAZIL PREDICTION
There won’t be too many one-sided affairs in this year’s women’s Olympic football tournament due to the fact that 12 teams means the gap between the best and the rest is squeezed. However, it does have to be argued that this is indeed one of those games in which the gap in quality is expected to show. Brazil aren’t the force they have been or potentially should but they are expected to win this one quite comfortably against fairly average opposition.
