The hosts, France, have a brilliant opportunity to guarantee themselves a medal match with a victory in this one against a Brazilian side that have underperformed throughout the history of women’s Olympic football and this year appears to be no different.

FRANCE PREVIEW: REVARD’S SIDE LACKING RHYTHM

Herve Renard’s France began their campaign by beating Colombia by three goals to two but it was a lot closer than they would have wanted when they were 3-0 up in that game at half-time and the Colombians dominated for most of the second-half.

In their second game, the French were then beaten by a resurgent and annoyed Canadian side with a 102nd minute winning goal. They then only just squeezed past a poor New Zealand team by two goals to one into the quarter-finals.

BRAZIL PREVIEW: STAGNANT AND STALE BRAZILIANS

With Marta still in the Brazil squad, having been a part of the Brazil side that won the silver medal in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, there is a clear example of how underwhelming and stagnant the Brazilian squad is generally.

They come into this one on the back of squeezing past a poor Nigerian side in their opening game before then being beaten by two goals to one by Japan in their second match. In their final game, they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Spain.

FRANCE VS BRAZIL PREDICTION

To be frank, this has the potential to be quite a miserable game for the neutral. For whatever reason, the fluency and form of the French is not where it should be under Herve Renard and that was the case in the UEFA Women’s Nations League recently, too, despite winning their group. Brazil, though, are extremely unconvincing in both defence and attack and the French, especially with home advantage, should find themselves stumbling into the semi-finals of this competition.
