CANADA PREVIEW: DEFENDING THE TITLE

Under the management of Bev Priestman, Canada are no longer as strong as they were back in Tokyo but they will remain one of the strongest sides in the competition - albeit drawn into a tough group alongside hosts France as well as Colombia and ‘the Football Ferns’ of New Zealand.

The Canadians come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat of Australia in a friendly a couple of weeks ago and that means they are unbeaten in 13 matches inside 90 minutes, albeit they have suffered two penalty shootout losses to the United States in that time.

NEW ZEALAND PREVIEW: STRUGGLING ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

In Oceania, New Zealand are a dominant force and they showed that in FIFA World Cup qualifying earlier this year when they enjoyed six wins out of six, scoring 32 goals in the process of finishing at the top of their Oceanian section.

However, outside of those six successive wins, New Zealand have won just six matches since the previous Olympics back in the summer of 2021. In that time, the Kiwis have played a total of 37 matches outside of the aforementioned FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

CANADA VS NEW ZEALAND PREDICTION

This is a nice way for a faltering and weaker than usual Canadian side to start as they seek to rebuild after their group stage elimination at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last summer. They face a New Zealand side that have a fair bit of work to do on building themselves up on the global stage and this is a really tough test ahead of playing hosts France as well in the groups. A comfortable Canadian victory is to be expected.
