CANADA PREVIEW: CANADIAN CONTROVERSY
After their opening game of the tournament, Canada find themselves mired in controversy when it was announced that their coaching staff were banned and they would be deducted six points for spying on the training of New Zealand using a drone.
That points deduction meant that the only way in which Canada could progress out of the groups would be by winning all three matches and, quite remarkably, after a 102nd minute winner against France and then a slender 1-0 defeat of Colombia, they did just that.
GERMANY PREVIEW: THE GERMAN REBOOT
Following their group stage exit at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last year, Germany have been one of the teams that have been trying to rebuild themselves and they have managed to do that just in time for the Olympics.
They began with a 3-0 hammering of Australia but their 3-0 loss to the United States perhaps showed they still had some way to go. In their final game of the tournament, they annihilated a gutsy and spirited Zambian side by four goals to one.

Both of these sides were knocked out in the group stages of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup last year and both sides are rebuilding. They meet in this quarter-final after a very different route to get there with very different stories. Germany’s is one of steady progression with flaws that need to be dealt with, whilst the Canadians have overcome major obstacles and scandals for this and there just appears to be a wind blowing for the defending champions.
