As has been the case for quite some time now, the Brazilian national women’s team, still without an Olympic gold medal, are not what they could or should be and are staring at a first round elimination should results go against them on the final day.

BRAZIL PREVIEW: NEEDING FRESHNESS

Arthur Elias’ Brazilian squads includes Marta, who represented Brazil at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics when they won the silver medals and it was an era where Brazil were at their strongest - the fact she remains as a starter is where the concerns should begin.

They began their campaign with a slender and unconvincing 1-0 defeat of one of the lowest ranked teams in the tournament, Nigeria. That was followed up by leading Japan by a goal to nil but conceding two second-half stoppage-time goals to fall behind.

SPAIN PREVIEW: SLICK, SECURE SPANISH

Spain are the world champions and are very much aiming for gold with a star studded squad that has overcome the Spanish FA’s sexism scandal in the last ten months. They have won both of their matches in this Olympics so far.

Spain began with a 2-1 win against Japan in which they found themselves a goal down early on but rallied to win. They then also had to suffer but squeeze past the Nigerians with Alexia Putellas notching an 85th minute winner.

BRAZIL VS SPAIN PREDICTION

These are two sides that sit in the top ten of FIFA’s rankings but the gulf between the two sides is quite large. Brazil come into this one reeling from that agonising loss to Japan in which they were just seconds away from qualification. They will, though, likely benefit from the fact that Spain will be able to make changes for this one in order to avoid injury or suspension. Brazil aren’t to be trusted to take advantage of that and one of the more likely outcomes is that this is quite a low-scoring affair.

BRAZIL VS SPAIN TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
