The Brazilians are yet to win the gold medal in the women’s Olympic football tournament but they did manage to grind out a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in their opening match as they now take on a Japanese side that suffered a slender defeat to world champions Spain the other day.

BRAZIL PREVIEW: UNCONVINCING GIANTS
Marta, who was a part of the Brazil squads that took the silver medal in this event at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, played the whole 90 minutes as the South Americans edged to a victory in unconvincing fashion against Nigeria.
Nigeria, arguably one of the weakest of the 12 teams competing in this event in Paris, held Brazil to just a 1-0 victory with forward Gabi Nunes notching what proved to be a first-half winning goal in the 37th minute.
JAPAN PREVIEW: THE FIGHT OF JAPAN
Up against the world champions and one of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain, Japan performed very well and took an early lead in that game with Aoba Fujino scoring an excellent free-kick in the 13th minute of the match in Nantes.
However, Spain turned the game on its head with Aitana Bonmati equalising quite soon after the opener before Mariona scored a 74th minute winner. They will try to take the game to an unconvincing Brazilian side.
BRAZIL VS JAPAN PREDICTION
This is an extremely tough match to call. Brazil are currently very underwhelming for a country their size and reputation, both in the men’s and the women’s game. They did manage to grind out a victory but with Spain to come this is most definitely a must not lose encounter. Given that, despite their good play, Japan only managed to score from a wonderful set-piece against Spain, they may not be able to breakdown a Brazil side that are expected to be cautious so a low-scoring encounter and a fairly dull game for the neutral would seem quite likely.
BRAZIL VS JAPAN TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
