The defending champion, Kelsey Mitchell of Canada, has qualified for the quarter-final of the women’s individual sprint in Paris and she is among one of the favourites for the gold medal but she faces stiff competition from two Team GB athletes with both Emma Finuncane and Sophie Capewell among the eight.

Germany’s Lea Sophia Friedrich has been one of Finucane’s biggest competitors in the last 12-18 months, as well as New Zealander Ellesse Andrews who finished second in Tokyo, but Finucane remains the favourite for this one.

There are a few riders tipped up more than the Colombian, though, including Team GB’s Jack Carlin as well as Matthew Richardson of Australia and Japanese cyclist Kaiya Ota. The overwhelming favourite for the gold medal, though, is still Dutch athlete Harrie Lavreysen.
