In 2020, Italy’s Marcell Jacobs completed a shock sprinting double when he took home the gold in the men’s 100m before leading the Italians to the gold medal in the men’s 4x100m relay ahead of Canada and China.

The Italians will be back this time around, too, but only just as the slowest qualifier and one of the ‘luckiest losers’ alongside Japan. The first heat was comfortably the quickest with the USA, South Africa and Team GB with Team USA the heavy favourites to take the gold medal.

TIP: USA TO WIN

PREDICTION

After London 2012, when Jessica Ennis won the gold medal in the women’s Heptathlon, the sport at the Olympics has been dominated by Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam and she is in the hunt for her third successive gold medal in this event at the games.

However, the Belgian heads into the second day of the women’s heptathlon sitting in second spot, 48 points behind Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson. It appears now a straight shootout between the pair in the final three events with a bet on Johnson-Thompson now good value.

TIP: KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON (GBR) TO WIN
