Pablo Carreno Busta has been given wildcard for the Barcelona Open. The 33-year-old, who was once number 10 in the world and one set away from a US Open final, is now situated outside of the top 100.

His last event was a Challenger in Madrid, which saw him win two matches in succession before falling at the quarter-final stage. He will face Arthur Fils, who made a third Masters 1000 quarter-final in succession in Monte-Carlo. 

Fils performed at a high level, losing serve in just one of the three matches he played before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight. The French number one had the chances to win and went a break up in the final set but couldn’t find a way to get over the line.

Nevertheless, it was yet another encouraging tournament for the youngster and we think he’ll get off to a winning start in Barcelona with a dominant win here.
