Nuno Borges will need to repeatedly upset the Spanish crowd if he’s to go deep at this year’s Madrid Masters.

The Portuguese world number 41, who stunned fans of the great Rafael Nadal in the final in Bastad last year, could play the villain again versus Spaniards in the draw, with Pablo Carreno Busta standing in his way of a second round clash with 28th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. 

Borges will arrive in the Spanish capital in high spirits after marking his first appearance in Monte Carlo with a run to the round of 16.

The 28-year-old will also be confident of making it third time lucky in Madrid having lost in the first round on his previous two visits.

Pablo Carreno Busta has a 2-5 record on tour this year and is just back inside the top 100 after a lengthy period of injury travails. 

The 33-year-old has made an impact in a number of Challengers in 2025 but has found the step up tricky so far and we expect Borges to have too much firepower and consistency in what will be their first ever meeting.
