Newcastle Preview: Flying Magpies

Last month, Newcastle United ended their long trophy drought by winning the EFL Cup as a result of an impressive 2-1 defeat of Liverpool at Wembley Stadium courtesy of goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

There was a huge party on Tyneside and, rather than be distracted, the Magpies appear to have been inspired as they now seek UEFA Champions League qualification. They hammered a poor Leicester City side by three goals to nil at the King Power Stadium last weekend.

Man Utd Preview: Consistently average

Manchester United come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais at Parc OL in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League in their most recent outing. They went 2-1 up from behind late on in that game before then conceding late on via Rayan Cherki.

The Red Devils sit firmly in the bottom-half of the Premier League ahead of the 32nd match day of the campaign with just 38 points collected. They have managed two draws and a defeat in their three matches across all competitions since the March international break.

Newcastle Team News: Gordon to be assessed

England international attacker Anthony Gordon was back on the grass on Wednesday and is expected to be assessed ahead of this weekend to see whether he could be involved. However, the likes of Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined for the Magpies.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes

Unavailable: Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Hall (Injured), Willock (Injured)

Questionable: Gordon (Fitness)

Man Utd Team News: Nothing new

Following on from their 2-2 draw with Lyon, Ruben Amorim said in his post-match press conference that he expects to have the same squad available to him for this weekend. That suggests the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Amad Diallo remain sidelined for the visitors.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund

Unavailable: Martinez (Injured), De Ligt (Injured), Evans (Injured), Heaven (Injured), Collyer (Injured), Diallo (Injured)

Questionable:

Newcastle vs Man Utd Prediction

Newcastle United have a small-ish squad that will likely have to be built on in the summer regardless of how the next month goes given they have already ensured UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. However, with the finishing line coming into view they can have some tunnel vision and that should help them dispatch of most sides – especially teams that are as average and probably distracted as United.
