After defeating Leonard Gates, two-time semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall will likely need to raise his game if he is to navigate his way past Andrew Gilding in the third round at Alexandra Palace.

Nathan Aspinall vs Andrew Gilding Prediction

12th seed Nathan Aspinall didn’t really need to get out of second gear against Leonard Gates in the second round, with the Stockport thrower averaging under 90 in his 3-1 victory over the American.

It’s unclear whether ‘The Asp’ has more gears to move into at the moment though, as he has endured a sub-standard year on tour which hasn’t been helped by some troublesome injury issues. There is also the fact that he hasn’t gone beyond the third round at Alexandra Palace in his previous four visits, which is certainly an under-achievement for a player of his quality.

Andrew Gilding has broken new ground by reaching the third round for the first time in his career, with ‘Goldfinger’ seeing off a stubborn Martin Lukeman in the second round. A quarter-finalist at the World Matchplay this year, Gilding often produces some of his best darts in front of the TV cameras and is certainly capable of going toe to toe with Aspinall here.

With Aspinall clearly not at his best, this promises to be a close encounter that should go over 5.5 sets.

Nathan Aspinall vs Andrew Gilding Tip: Over 5.5 sets
