MICHAEL JOHNSON VS JAMIE MULLARKEY LOWDOWN

Michael Johnson (20-17) has the most unflattering record in the UFC, but he still has skills. He has fought a ‘who’s who’ of lightweight assassins in his long UFC career which started all the way back in 2010. In that time, he has collected the valuable scalps of Tony Ferguson (2012), Edson Barboza (2015) and Dustin Poirier (2016). However, four losses on the bounce brought his UFC record down to 12-13 last year. He was then paired with Alan Patrick and turned back the clock to knock him out in vintage fashion.

Jamie Mullarkey (14-5) returns after suffering his third knockout. He just put on two of the best performances of his career TKOing Khama Worthy and Devonte Smith last year but ran into the surging Jalin Turner back in March. Turner could easily be a future title contender, but Mullarkey needs to show that same character to bounce back like he did when he lost his first two UFC fights and has a good match-up here to do so.

MICHAEL JOHNSON VS JAMIE MULLARKEY PREDICTION

This is a tough fight for the veteran and a great opportunity for Mullarkey to add a big name to the record. Johnson’s consistency has always been his issue losing fights he should win, but when he is on, his speed and hands are enough to trouble anyone.

If the Johnson that fought Patrick turns up, Mullarkey’s chin is getting tested. His recent knockout loss to Turner was worrying as he was left as a wreck on the canvas, so he cannot afford to trade with Johnson.

He is a good striker, but he does not have the speed to keep up, however he has the cardio and grappling to smother Johnson and shut him down. If he embraces the grind while mixing in strikes with level changes to close the distance, we can see the Aussie bagging all three rounds at least with value on Johnson as a significant underdog.
