MASON JONES VS DAVID ONAMA LOWDOWN

Mason Jones (10-1(1)) does not get to make up for ruining his fight with Alan Patrick after an accidental eye poke. Patrick pulled out of the rematch a few days ago but at least Jones is still on the card. The former Cage Warriors double champion is desperate to prove his worth and display that unbeaten form that got him to the UFC especially after the last fight and losing his debut against Mike Davis via unanimous decision.

David Onama (8-0) steps up to the plate on short notice to make his debut becoming the first UFC fighter to represent Uganda. He fights out of Glory MMA and Fitness with James Krause and he has a lot of potential. He is unbeaten and has finished all of his fights – five knockouts and three submissions but he faces his toughest challenge by far.

MASON JONES VS DAVID ONAMA PREDICTION

Jones is very well-rounded and will be the favourite, but all the pressure is on him. Not winning in your first three fights is never a good look and Onama has nothing lose stepping up on just a few days’ notice.

Jones has to approach this fight in his usual way and that is to be aggressive and force the pressure. He is a solid striker and is a black belt in judo so is more than capable of getting the fight to the ground. If the fight does hit the mat, he also has good jiu-jitsu and will be very proactive in looking for a submission.

We expect Onama to be patient and wait to counter. He is rapid with a fierce jab and good striking defence so he can frustrate Mason, luring him into throwing big shots and countering with venom.

Onama has the speed advantage and he has the power to test Mason’s granite chin. We can see Onama causing the upset, but we expect Jones’ grappling to be the difference on the night. If the odds stay heavily stacked for Jones, then Onama is the smart bet.
