MARVIN VETTORI VS JARED CANNONIER LOWDOWN
Marvin Vettori (19-6-1) remains relevant after another vintage unanimous decision over Roman Dolidze back in March. In fact, his last six fights have ended in a unanimous decision going 4-2 all against absolute killers. Wins over Jack Hermansson (2020) and Kevin Holland (2021) extended his streak to five, but Israel Adesanya (2021) killed the dream in his title fight. He went on to grind out Paulo Costa (2021) but then fell to the former champion Robert Whittaker (2022).
Adesanya and Whittaker are also the only men Jared Cannonier (16-6) has lost to in recent years. Whittaker (2020) snapped his three-fight knockout streak with a unanimous decision at UFC 254. He responded with another unanimous decision over Kelvin Gastelum (2021) and knockout over Derek Brunson (2022) but then ran into the champ. He is also back in the win column with an impressive decision win over a top contender albeit a close split decision to Sean Strickland in December last year.
MARVIN VETTORI VS JARED CANNONIER PREDICTION
Although Vettori has become a decision king, we expect this to be an exciting scrap. The Italian is slightly taller, but Cannonier will boast a three-inch reach advantage. The key factors here will be Vettori’s durability and Cannonier’s takedown defence.
Cannonier has carried his power down from heavyweight, but Vettori has a granite chin and has never been finished. His route to victory is calling upon his grappling and cardio to grab a hold of Cannonier and wear him down.
He is a top wrestler with underrated jiu-jitsu but that said, he is also a solid striker and will have the confidence of going toe-to-toe on the feet with the knockout artist. Expect him to back his chin, walk Cannonier down and offload a relentless output of strikes while threatening the takedown and clinch.
We feel Cannonier has to start quickly and land something clean within the first three rounds. Vettori will enforce enough pressure to impress the judges in each round so unless Cannonier can rock him early, the Italian will run away with it.
We understand why the odds are close considering Cannonier’s striking advantage, but five-round Vettori is a beast and we expect his chin to make it into the championship rounds where he can finish strong and break down a fatigued Cannonier with his grappling and volume.
Prediction: Vettori via Decision
Value bet: Vettori via Decision
