IAN GARRY VS NEIL MAGNY LOWDOWN
Ian Garry (12-0) is gutted Geoff Neal pulled out with an injury as he knew an impressive finish would have catapulted him towards the top five. Thankfully, he is still on the card with a tough opponent and has the utmost confidence in extending his unbeaten record with a sixth UFC dub. He is coming off two knockouts over Kenan Song and Daniel Rodriguez and is planning to make it three from three in 2023.
Neil Magny (28-10) steps up fresh off his split decision win over Philip Rowe in June. That boosted his record for the most welterweight wins in the UFC and he clearly believes he can extend that record as Garry is not a high-level grappler. His only losses in the last five years are to Michael Chiesa (2021), Shavkat Rakhmonov (2022) and Gilbert Burns (2023) going 7-3 in that time.
IAN GARRY VS NEIL MAGNY PREDICTION
We have seen enough of Magny to know exactly what he will try to do. He has one of the longest frames in the division, but he uses his reach to tie his opponents up against the fence. He will try and close the distance, clinch up and subdue Garry’s weapons for three rounds.
It will be a smart strategy as Garry is a lethal striker who is improving with each fight. His grappling has also barely been tested, so he will have to be drilling his sprawls. He has been training for a striker, so this is a tough test for him.
If he can maintain the distance, he will find a lot of joy with his 1-2 and constantly moving and feinting to get Magny to over commit and set up his power right hand and head kick.
There is value on Magny considering his experience, grappling and cardio. However, we expect Garry to remain illusive enough and use his power to muscle his way out of the clinch and dish out all the damage on the feet.
Prediction: Garry via Decision
Value bet: Magny to win
