EDGAR CHAIREZ VS DANIEL LACERDA LOWDOWN
Edgar Chairez’s (10-5(1)) went into their first fight at UFC Fight Night 227 on Mexican Independence Day off the back of an unsuccessful debut. In fairness, it was an incredibly tough first assignment taking on the unbeaten prospect Tatsuro Taira (2023) on short notice. He lost a unanimous decision and thought he had earnt his first win in the first round while he had Lacerda tied up in a standing guillotine.
Daniel Lacerda (11-5(1)) looked to be out when the referee stopped the fight, but after a video replay, it was deemed to be an early stoppage and turned into a ‘no contest’. Much to Lacerda’s relief as that would have been five losses in a row. The only reason he is still in the UFC is due to his exciting style and ‘kill or be killed’ attitude, but if he slips again, it has to be curtains for his UFC career.
EDGAR CHAIREZ VS DANIEL LACERDA PREDICTION
Last month, we predicted that they will both be aggressive carrying confidence in their hands and jiu-jitsu with Lacerda being reckless. That is exactly what we saw, but they were calmer than expected which was very smart.
They both traded on the feet before Lacerda exploited a hole in Chairez’s wrestling before getting caught in his guillotine. It ended prematurely, but they would have both learnt a lot in those four minutes.
Lacerda took Chairez down easily, but he can afford to leave his neck exposed. If he tightens that up, he can assume a lot of control time. They were also evenly matched on the feet. The Mexican had tighter boxing, but Lacerda looked very threatening when he opened-up.
Considering the form and how the last fight ended, Chairez is understandably the heavy favourite. Lacerda was our value bet last time when he was a smaller underdog, so he makes all the sense from a betting point-of-view.
That said, we saw enough in their last fight to back Chairez. We expect Lacerda to fall back on his wrestling again which will give Chairez more opportunities for a submission. We also have a feeling his kicks and knees will set up the finish.
Prediction: Chairez via KO/TKO
Value bet: Lacerda via finish
