DIEGO LOPES VS PAT SABATINI LOWDOWN
It is quite rare to lose a unanimous decision on debut and have your stock rise. That is exactly what happened to Diego Lopes (22-6) at UFC 288. He stepped up on short notice to take on the undefeated Movsar Evloev at UFC 288. He tested the Russian and followed that performance up with a ruthless first-round submission over Gavin Tucker back in August.
Now, he takes on another beast of a grappler in Pat Sabatini (18-4). He is 5-1 in the UFC now after a vintage performance and submission over Lucas Almeida back in June. That display came with great relief after Damon Jackson snapped his six-fight win streak by pounding him out in the first round.
DIEGO LOPES VS PAT SABATINI PREDICTION
Sabatini’s striking needs a little refining, but he is a top tier wrestler with a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and he will not no doubt resort to his grappling here. What makes this interesting is that Lopes is also a black belt and extremely dangerous off his back.
His confidence in his jiu-jitsu means he offers little resistance to the takedown and we fully expect Sabatini to dump him on the canvas. Once they hit the deck, Lopes will constantly attack off his back.
We can Sabatini’s wrestling subduing Lopes and cruising to a decision. However, we can also see him taking damage as he closes the distance. This could easily look like Sabatini’s fight with Jackson, and Lopes is the value bet.
