Michael van Gerwen vs Luke Littler Prediction
Michael van Gerwen steamrolled into a seventh PDC World Darts Championship final with a 6-1 rout of Chris Dobey, the Dutchman averaging 98.84 and converting 42.9% of his doubles in a professional display.
Due to the exploits of opponent Luke Littler in 2024, as well as reigning world champion Luke Humphries, the spotlight had largely been off Van Gerwen heading into this event, but that has played into his hands as he has not been under as much pressure as he has in previous years. The three-time champion has played like a man determined to return the pinnacle of a sport where he was top dog for a number of years, but he must do so against the man who could well dominate the tour for the foreseeable future.
Luke Littler cut a nervy figure in his opening couple of matches at Alexandra Palace, but he has well and truly shaken that off now, with the 17-year-old delivering his best display of the tournament in his commanding semi-final defeat of Stephen Bunting.
‘The Nuke’ averaged 105.48 – the highest of the tournament so far – and improved his efficiency on the outer ring to make it two World Championship finals from two attempts. He will now aim to go one better than last year and become the youngest ever world champion.
The pair met 12 times on stage in 2024, with both winning six games apiece. Their most televised recent clash was in the semi-finals of the World Series of Darts Finals in September, with Littler averaging 107.95 in an 11-4 victory on his way to the title in Amsterdam.
Although Littler will be seen as the favourite to lift the Sid Waddell trophy, Van Gerwen will take some hope from the fact that the youngster has shown occasional drops in his level throughout the event, and has relied rather heavily on his admittedly sensational 180-hitting. The Dutchman will need to take full advantage of those dips if he is to challenge for the title, but he has shown throughout the event that he is up for the fight.
In what could be one of the classic Ally Pally finals and one that is likely to be played at a frenetic pace, expect over 10.5 sets.
Michael van Gerwen vs Luke Littler Tip: Over 10.5 sets
